Trauma Informed Healing Training for Health Professionals
We offer training for health professionals who want to work more effectively in a therapeutic setting with survivors of child abuse and trauma. Training options are basic or intensive.
The training will
- explain the 10 principles of healing from trauma and the neuroscience theory behind these principles
- provide the opportunity to practice and apply the principles
- use role playing and case studies to reinforce learning outcomes
- involve extensive personal practice applying the principles of Trauma Informed Healing (intensive program)
Basic Training
Attendance
This training requires a minimum attendance of two 8 hour long workshops over 2 days, with the option of an additional 2 day advanced level training. Participants completing advanced training will receive our Competency in Trauma Healing Certificate. Training is focused on the therapeutic background and application to practice.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the training participants will be able to:
- Outline the 10 principles of the peer support model of trauma healing, including how to define, describe and demonstrate the process for healing from childhood trauma.
- Utilise this knowledge with their own clients in a clinical setting.
- Apply practical strategies including: Supporting a client in a triggered state, ways to assist clients’ self-awareness of dissociation, and practical and proven de-triggering techniques that can be readily adapted as tools for clients’ personalised work.
- Recall the neuroscience principles involved.
- Use effective strategies to assist clients to connect to their brain’s emotional right hemisphere.
- Articulate the critical safety elements required in an effective trauma-healing model, including ways to keep the client safe whilst working with trauma memories.
- Identify the need for self-determination and re-empowerment and identify treatment contra-indicators.
- Describe methods to ensure containment and co-consciousness.
- Recall and practice strategies to ensure emotional and physical safety.
- Explain to clients the neuropsychological reasons for self-harm and proven ways of reducing the addiction to self-harm.
- Apply the key elements of an empowering therapeutic relationship to their own trauma healing work.
- Practice ways to ensure a client-centred and client-informed approach.
- Utilise appropriate vocabulary to facilitate a non-judgmental therapeutic relationship.
- Explain re-parenting strategies to their client and describe innovative tools to enable client facilitated re-parenting.
- Demonstrate respect for the innate knowledge of the client.
Sessions
Session 1 – Trauma and the Brain
Session 2 – The 10 principles of Trauma Informed healing for assisting complex trauma clients.
Session 3 – Safety: How we achieve it at HFL, how it can be achieved in the work place, including de-triggering and ensuring co-consciousness.
Session 4 – The importance of the brain’s emotional right hemisphere in facilitating healing.
Session 5 – The therapeutic approach.
Session 6 – De triggering, responding to self-harm and assisting clients with abandonment issues.
Session 7/8 – Experiential.
This training qualifies as OPD points for Health professionals.
Basic Training Costs (max 8 participants)
- $650 – Two day (TIH) training
- $750 – Two day (TIH) training with overnight accommodation*
Lunch will be provided on both days.
*Additional nights accommodation by request (subject to availability)

Intensive Training
Course pre-requisites
- Must be a health professional who has a minimum qualification of a Diploma in Counselling (or equivalent)
- Reflective capacity
- Self-support/self-care skills
Attendance
This training runs for one week and is an experiential course in which you will learn and practice the 10 principles of Trauma Informed Healing. You will also learn about the therapeutic background to the model. This training also covers the way the model has been developed, explains the principles of the Healing Week at Heal For Life as well as extensive experiential opportunities to practice the model. This is the basic training we give to all of our peer support volunteers and facilitators.

- $999 for a weeks training with evening meals and accommodation

Peer Support
Course pre-requisites
- Must be a health professional who is a survivor of childhood trauma and has previously attended a healing week
Attendance
A 2 day Trauma Informed Healing program plus a further 2 day advanced training for complex trauma and multi-diagnosis clients.
